Minutes – St. John’s Church Council Meeting 7/1/2006
Minutes – St. John’s Church Council Meeting 7/1/2006
Present: Pastor Watt, Jim Rentschler, Jim Litterick, Kathy Callies, Lois Kuhle, Earl Voeltz, Julie Schwader, Walter Rentschler, Henry Rentschler, Jr. and Helen Sprecher.
Pastor began with devotions.
Lois Kuhle provided treasurer’s report for quarterly voters meeting. Gifts are consistently falling behind expenses. Mission obligations have not been paid.
Jim Litterick reported for the elders. A request for release for Ladonna Mette Beck has been received. Pastor will be on vacation on Sunday, August 20; elders will likely have to cover the service. The instructional service has been moved to July 30. A greeters listing has been prepared and will be included in the next newsletter.
Henry Rentschler reported for the trustees:
Printer/copier options were reviewed. Their suggestion is a laser printer for approximately $449 (including rebate). Another low-volume copier is required to support education programs, etc.
Shingling for the west side of the parsonage is estimated at $1200 for materials.
Tuck pointing needs sealing as well as some work on the bell tower, etc. Estimates are $7582 to $6265 if we do some of the work.
Sidewalk project has been set aside due to current lack of funds.
Education committee – Julie had no report.
Cemetery committee – Earl had no report.
Financial secretary – Helen reported that her numbers matched Lois’. She asked about a concern about a request to recognize every memorial gift made at a recent funeral. It was general consensus that family recognition of such gifts is adequate.
Jim Rentschler reported that he will be appointing Rich Schmit, Curt Hueners and Cody Hoyer to the nominating committee.
Discussion regarding Evangelism and Stewardship Committees resulted in recommendation of Tom Hueners and Joyce Everhart to be contacted for Evangelism Committee with the idea of a mission fair to be developed; Marilyn Eggert, Charlene Schmit and Thelma Hueners will be contacted for Stewardship Committee with the initial focus of celebration of St. John’s 125th anniversary in 2007. Additional contacts identified included Staci Eggert, Thelma Haak, Darcy Albert, Mae Brummett.
Jim reported that the Miner County Service Committee has met and will meet again on August 10. They are very open to suggestions.
Next meeting was set for October 11 at 7:30 with the quarterly voters meeting scheduled for Sunday, October 15 at 10:30 a.m.
Submitted, Kathy Callies, Secretary.

Pastor’s Report: Pastor Watt had provided a written report that is attached. Pastor also explained printer/copier options. Worship This Week July 30, 2006
Instructional Liturgy on the Divine ServiceEighth Sunday After PentecostJuly 30, 2006Introduction to the ServiceGod speaks and we listen. God announces His mercy and we call upon Him for help and forgiveness and in thanksgiving and praise. Here is the ebb and flow of the Divine Service. God calls and by His aid we answer. This week’s service contains seven parts during which we will hear the purpose of each of those elements of our worship. As we gather together today, we continue in a pattern of worship that dates back to Adam and Eve. Yes, the words and languages have changed; but at the heart of it, it is still the same. Abraham was circumcised into the covenant, we are baptized; Moses and Aaron sacrificed animals, we receive the Lord's Supper. This is the pattern that was long ago established by God He speaks His mercy—we receive His forgiveness and respond in prayer, praise and thanksgiving.

Invocation; Confession; Absolution
Part II: Christmas – The Word Made Flesh

Pastor's Sermon Posted

Pastor Watt's Sermon for Bertha’s Funeral, July 25th has been posted on his sermon website. You can read it by clicking
here.
The text is
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever! (Psalm 111:10, ESV)
From the sermon...
One temptation at funerals is to only say good things about the person who had died. But believe me; they don’t care if we remember the bad stuff too. In fact, Christians who die want you to remember that it is sin that brought them here. In our church we confess our sins in our Sunday Worship. We say that we are by nature sinful and unclean. When death comes to us we know that we deserve it. As much as we are loved by people, by family and friends, that doesn’t take away the fact that we’ll all end up here. The most important reason we are here today is because we need to be told again that God has done something about this (death). When Christians die they want you to remember sin, so that you remember that God himself became a human being in Jesus Christ to save sinful people from this. They want you to remember that your sin will lead you here, but that Jesus Christ hung on a cross and died for you.

Pastor's Sermon Posted

Pastor Watt's Sermon for Sunday, July 16th has been posted on his sermon website. You can read it by clicking
here.
The text is
So to keep me from being too elated by the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (2 Corinthians 12:7-10, ESV)
From the sermon...
Well, as often happens, God has different ideas about strength and weakness than you and I do. He has different ways for us to live our lives than we naturally want to live them. We think of strength, God speaks of weakness. We think of honor, God speaks about being humble. We think of getting the job done, God says he’s already taken care of it. That’s our old sinful nature speaking. Deep in our hearts we want to take care of the things that are God’s things to take care of. God is not above slapping us down and putting us in our place when we need it. He has our eternal future in mind. Temporary sickness and difficulties in this life are small compared to eternity. Even death is sometimes used by God to get us to focus on what’s important, to get us to see just how weak and short our lives really are. God will use whatever is necessary to keep us focused on Him and what He has done for us in Jesus. That’s what we see Paul talking about here. He needed God to be strong. Paul needed to be reminded that he lived only by God’s strength not his own.

Incredibles Relay For Life Team, Sponsored by St. John's Youth Group
The Incredibles walked all night at Howard’s 3rd annual Relay for Life July 14th and 15th. Our team members were Tom and Karen Hueners, Jonathan, Waunita, and Miciah Watt, Deana and John Nelson, Darcy Albert, Joe, Donna and team Captain Megan Bechen, all of St. John’s Lutheran Church. Other members were Jacki Moor, Allison Clarke, Barbra Page and Ken and Millie Horter. Six other teams participated in this year’s Relay for Life. Music and many activities scheduled all through the night kept everyone awake. Many members of the team participated in games such as a scavenger hunt, banana relay races, and a rope race. Everyone had a lot of fun with the themed laps, which included “Pretty in Pink”, Light up for a Cure”, “Cap Lap”, “Hawaiian”, and “Noisemakers”. Our team raised a total of $1,703.75. We raised this money in many ways such as selling baked goods, donations, and a Howard Tiger quilt raffle. We came in 2nd place with the most money. We would like to thank the evening guild, Ladies Aid, and Teens for Christ for their donations, along with all other who made a donation or helped us to raise so much for the American Cancer Society. Megan Bechen, Team Captain.

Worship This Week July 23, 2006
Worship This Week – July 23, 2006Seventh Sunday after Pentecost (LW, Series B)Seasonal Emphasis: God deserves our praise
Today's General Theme: The child of God is called to a life of righteousness
Mood of Service: Determined/bold
NOTES: God's children are on display as we live in this world. Through us, God demonstrates what live in this world was meant to be. This presupposes, of course, that we are living as God intends! Obviously, if we are living the way unbelievers do, no one will benefit from our witness! That, however, would be a contradiction, for God's children have been called to turn from the sinful ways of this world to a new life of righteousness founded on Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit works to renew us inwardly so that our lives conform more and more to God's holy will and less and less to the evil ways of this world. (

Pastor Watt's Sermon for Sunday, July 16th has been posted on his sermon website. You can read it by clicking

The text is
Mark.5:21-43And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered about him, and he was beside the sea. Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing him, he fell at his feet and implored him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.” And he went with him. And a great crowd followed him and thronged about him. And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse. She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.” And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?” And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’ ” And he looked around to see who had done it. But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.” While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler’s house some who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.” And he allowed no one to follow him except Peter and James and John the brother of James. They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. And when he had entered, he said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed at him. But he put them all outside and took the child’s father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was. Taking her by the hand he said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement. And he strictly charged them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat. (Mark 5:21-43, ESV)
From the sermon...
That’s when Jesus says, “Stop! You don’t have to be afraid. Just believe in me.” Well, just look what he did. A suffering dying woman touched his cloths and stopped bleeding. St. Mark says that when she did that power flowed out from Him. In Mark’s language the word he used was dynamite. It was an explosion of life giving power. She was restored to complete health. Life returned to a lifeless little girl when Jesus told her to get up. He only spoke two little words into her ear, and life came back to her and she began walking around, because, Mark says, that’s what living little girls do.

Pastor's Sermon Posted

Pastor Watt's Sermon for Sunday, July 9th has been posted on his sermon website. You can read it by clicking
here.
The text is
Mark 4:35-41On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even wind and sea obey him?” (Mark 4:35-41, ESV)
From the sermon...
If you’ve ever been out on a choppy lake during a storm you know the fear. As the waves grow and begin to splash over the sides of the boat you imagine the boat disappearing under the dark green foamy water. What will you do? Swim, how will you know which way to go, how will you keep afloat with the rain and wind. The fear is real. The disciples were afraid… for their lives. What a contrast to Jesus sleeping in the boat! Here he is sleeping soundly in a boat that’s filling with water and about to sink. And finally the disciples can’t bear the fear any more. And Jesus lying on the cushion sound asleep exasperated the whole experience. They were facing death and Jesus doesn’t seem to care! So they wake him up. “How could you sleep at a time like this? Don’t you care if we drown? There’s real danger here and you’re just sleeping your life away, and ours!” Jesus doesn’t answer their question but speaks directly to the water. “Quiet! Be still!” I imagine him looking also at the disciples as if to say “you too!”

Worship This Week July 16,2006
Worship This Week – July 16, 2006Sixth Sunday after Pentecost (LW, Series B)
Seasonal Emphasis: God deserves our praise
Today's General theme: The church honors God by humble obedience
Mood of Service: Determined/bold
SERVICE NOTES: Again, as last week, we are reminded that the proper worship of God involves more than just coming to church once a week, it involves every facet of our existence. Today's service teaches us that humble obedience to God is the hallmark of a child of God. We are constantly being confronted with choices to do what we think best, or what someone else advises us, but as children of God, our concern is to trust God and do things His way. If we have so little confidence in Him that we ignore His will in order to get our way, how can we claim to have faith? The child of God exalts God's will in his or her life, even when it seems counter to personal desires. (

Worship This Week – July 9, 2006Fifth Sunday after Pentecost (LW, Series B)Season Emphasis: God Deserves our Praise
Today's General Theme: Faith in God's promises allows us to serve Him boldly
Mood of Service: Joyful/encouraging
Joyful/trusting/encouraging
NOTES: Praise of our God involves much more than the time we spend in an actual worship service. It rather involves every facet of our existence. We are renewed in our hearts by the Holy Spirit, and this inner renewal becomes obvious in our daily lives. Thus all of life becomes a way of praising our wonderful God. Today our worship emphasizes that as we lead these renewed lives in service to God, we often meet trouble and opposition, but we are not to fear, for God delivers His children. (

Pastor Watt's Sermon for Sunday, July 2nd has been posted on his sermon website. You can read it by clicking
here.
The text is Psalm 42:1
As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. (Psalm 42:1, ESV)
From the sermon...
Today, a few days before the 4th is a good time to take about the wonderful gift of religious freedom we’ve been given through our God, in this country.
For some Christians worshipping Jesus Christ is a matter of life and death. But for us, actually it means even more than that. You see, all eternity hangs in the balance. It’s not just a mater of life and death; it’s a matter of everlasting life and everlasting death. Through His presence here today, God gives us life and life to the full. Through God’s Word and the Sacrament God puts Jesus into our lives in a way that gives us much more than worldly freedom. He is the way the truth and the life. Through Word and water, bread and wine he enters our lives and we are changed, we are set free from sin and death.Labels: Sermon, Worship
